April 21: Red Creek School

Spotlight on Schools: Red Creek School

April 21, 2017 — Hello Black River Falls Community! This is Dr. Shelly Severson with the School District of Black River Falls here to share this week’s installment of our Spotlight on Schools! I’d like to take today’s spotlight time to talk about Red Creek School.

While we are through over three-quarters of our first year at Red Creek Elementary, some days it still almost takes your breath away to walk into the building and realize that this beautiful facility belongs to us and this community and that our students get to come here to learn every day. Last week I was able to go to Red Creek during the Wisconsin History Fair and listen to some of our fourth-grade students share their expertise on their research topics. There were many parents and grandparents there as visitors. One grandfather came up to me and was incredibly complimentary of the amazing opportunities the community has given our students.

We are not the only ones that think Red Creek is amazing! We recently got a phone call from The Daily Reporter that Red Creek will be honored at their annual Top Projects recognition banquet. I will be traveling to Milwaukee with Mr. Dobbs and Mrs. Simonson, the principals at Red Creek, to receive this award on behalf of the District and community.

While we are speaking of Red Creek, I also wanted to keep the community updated with a few final wrap up pieces to the project. As the spring weather continues to bring us the showers that we typically expect, you may have noticed that there are large pieces of the playground that are roped off as they are much too wet for kids to play on. Due to the aggressive timeline of the construction process, the planting of the grass happened much later in the fall than we would have preferred. While we tried to keep students off the grass for a while in an attempt to allow the seeding to really take root.

If you recall, last fall was also a very wet season which rolled right into winter. We were not able to address the grading of the playground area during the winter, but now that it has thawed, we’re back on it. We are not satisfied with the drainage that currently exists on the site. We are working with the civil engineers and the excavation company to ensure we make some corrections in June, right after students are done for the year. We have had such great partners throughout this project and are confident that they will make this right prior to us finalizing the project. I just wanted to keep you in the loop that we recognize that currently it does not meet our expectations. We will continue to work with our partners to ensure the taxpayer dollars, that you’ve invested, will produce the product that we can all be proud of!

In keeping with our routine this year of sharing some sunshine each week, I wanted to highlight one of the comments that a parent of a Red Creek Elementary School student responded when they were asked; “What do you appreciate most about the District?”

“The staff are all so wonderful. They care about my child and he feels loved there by the staff. The district does a wonderful job of making sure we get timely information through a variety of resources.

As always, if you have any questions about this or anything else within the district, don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you so much for your support of the School District of Black River Falls! Go Tigers!
