September 15, 2017: Homecoming

September 15, 2017

Hello Black River Falls Community!  This is Dr. Shelly Severson, with the School District of Black River Falls, and I am thrilled to be starting another year of our Spotlight on Schools!  We were so excited to welcome students back into our schools this fall!  The enthusiasm of students, and parents, was absolutely contagious!  I often say that we should video their enthusiasm on that first day and remind them in February how excited they were to re-join us.

Once again, our summer was filled with learning opportunities for kids, professional development and curriculum work for our teachers, and an awful lot of projects throughout the buildings!  As we welcome everyone back for another year, it is a perfect time to talk about the festivities and annual homecoming traditions in Black River Falls.  Next week, September 17th - 23rd, will be our week of homecoming celebrations.

The festivities begin with the traditional boys volleyball game and the girls powder puff football game on Sunday, special dress up days during the school week, just like we remember from days of old.  On Thursday night, the traditional victory march and community pep rally will happen.  The kids are meeting at the Skyline and will wind their way back down to the high school.  The pep rally will be at XXX in the west gym of the school.

On Friday, the fall sports captains, pep band, and the cheerleaders will travel to the elementary schools for an old fashioned pep rally!  Then the high school students head back to their school for a fun tailgating lunch.  The traditional homecoming parade begins at 2:00 pm and will proceed right down Main Street!

Something special about the homecoming festivities this year is that the students at the high school are working to do something meaningful with their efforts.  They will be hosting a coin drive to send to the victims of the natural disasters in both Texas and Florida.  On Monday, the students will be asked to bring in pennies, on Tuesday...nickels, Wednesday...dimes, etc.  Mrs. Helstad’s students will count the money on a daily basis and will chart the progress for the whole school to watch.  Homecoming week is also filled with sporting events throughout the week.  At each of these events, there will be collection containers in case there are any community members that would also like to make donations.  We’re very proud of our students for wanting to making their celebrations about something bigger than themselves.  Again, if you are interested in making a donation, you can stop by the high school or any of the homecoming sporting events and make your donation.

We are looking forward to making the 2017-2018 school year one of the best yet!  As always, thank you so much for your support of the School District of Black River Falls!  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me!  Let’s show our Tiger Pride!
